From the RIght Seat
by Assistant Chief Pilot Peter Rafle

What do you think about as you walk out to the airplane? Let me spend a few moments to discuss how I preflight an airplane.  Of course, before I examine the airplane, I examine myself using the IMSAFE evaluative device to check that I am physically and emotionally safe to fly.  Before I fly, I ask am I free of Illness, have I taken any Medication that will affect my flying ability, am I affected by Stress at work or home,  have I consumed any Alcohol within eight hours, am I Fatigued, am I  suffering Emotions such as anger, depression, and anxiety?

Congratulations Chris Almonte…Will you marry me?
Flight coordinator Chris Almonte had a very busy week toward the end of August.  First he earned his Private Pilot’s license and then, he became engaged to Christina Pavia, and she said “Yes.”  Best wishes to you both.

THE GO – AROUNDChief Pilot Rob Argila

A good pilot knows when to go-around. If you feel your approach is not right, add full power, slowly retract the flaps and go around. It is better to feel good about your approach to the runway instead of forcing a landing. You can execute a go-around from any point in the pattern.

Make the go-around procedure the rule, at least in your mind, rather than the exception. Look for a reason, any reason, to savor the thrill of flight a few moments longer by taking another trip around the traffic pattern. Land only if everything is under control – otherwise, go around.
