As we entered the busy holiday season, let’s pause to appreciate a wonderful flying summer and fall. We can only hope that the winter will be mild and flyable.
Lots of things have been happening at 39N as you can see below.
Plans for our annual Santa Fly In have begun. This is a highlight of our community outreach and it is greatly appreciated by all – the children receiving gifts when Santa arrives and the children that are served by the Mercer County Board of Social Services. It is truly a “win win” event.
We will also collect food (canned or boxed) to give to the local Foodbanks. So we hope you’ll help us with that also. They are in desperate straits.

The musing of an old navigator
I was in a discussion recently that concerned the use of technology in aviation. The theme was how the proliferation of digital readouts and glass screens have produced more distractions for the pilot. It is true that, for some, the novelty of having so much information available is too much eye candy. No matter what the systems are producing in the way of information, the pilot’s prime responsibility is to control the airplane.
I remember when flying large, four engine airplanes, with enough panels to require three crew members, I still had to use the basic “power plus attitude equals performance”. With no GPS, but with VOR, NDB (with an RMI), LORAN, and a sextant, we could go anywhere in the world. I am no Luddite, I love GPS and all that it can provide. It can do in milliseconds what used to take thirty minutes for a navigator to do….. but without the art.
Jeff Slutsky got the flying bug when he was 12, anxious to join his father and brother as certificated pilots. He has been a pilot for over 20 years, and has been a CFII, MEII for the last 8. He graduated from Princeton rival, University of Pennsylvania, and after a sojourn overseas, has settled in central New Jersey. He is known for using his Italian Greyhound dogs as co-pilots (see inset), so don’t be surprised to hear an occasional bark on the CTAF.
We also would like to welcome Kyle Marten as a flight coordinator. Kyle will be answering the phone, scheduling, and all of the multitude of tasks flight coordinators have to do.
You must bring the confirmation number with you when you come for your medical appointment. No walk-in without a confirmation number.
ANNUAL SANTA FLYIN
Help & Contribute!
For the 39th year we are sponsoring our annual Santa Fly-In. If you have been here a while, you know what a great event this is. If you’re new – don’t miss it. We started it when we were at Kupper Airport (47N), and continued and expanded the event when we came to 39N.
On Wednesday , December 24th at 11:00 am, Santa will fly into the airport with gifts for area children.
To have your child (children) participate, you must bring a wrapped gift for your child with the name in large print. (Gifts should not exceed 12″. Santa has a weigh limitation.) If you have more than one child, wrap the gifts in the same paper and tie them together, so Santa can give your childrens gifts together.
You must also bring an equal number of unwrapped gifts for NEEDY children. In the lobby there will be two chimneys to receive the respective gifts. Get your gifts in early, as Santa dispenses them in the order we receive them. (Collection starts Nov. 28th.)
We’ll also collect food for the needy in the lobby. So let’s make the holiday season of 2014 a memorable one. MORE FACTS

Members at the September dinner meeting made motions, voted and put the final touches on PAFT’s 20th Anniversary celebration which will be held on November 12. PAFT members should check out the Next Meeting Web page to make sure they register for the dinner.
October’s fall foliage fly-in to Sky Acres was bumpy (and provided an excellent test of cross-wind technique on the return to 39N).
November’s fly-in will be a special event – it’s back to the first airport PAFT went to when the club was formed in 1994.
